Don’t feel like studying for PMP?

Before starting the discussion on whether you can pass PMP without studying, an important question to ask is if you are you a project manager? Are you a PMP (Project Management Professional)certification aspirant? Are you also someone who doesn’t like to study at all but want to get their PMP certification? Then this article is for you. It is completely natural to feel like not studying, it is the easy thing to do we can just go about our other tasks like nothing is happening and then one day we just go and sit for exam and pass. We all wished it was this simple. But the reality is rarely so simple. In reality it takes effort. If you are someone who thinks you can pass without studying, this article will be a reality check. I suggest you read with an open mind to complex realities.

Understanding the situation

PMP is no different than this complex reality. Every PMP certified individual went through years of often rigorous project experience that required a lot of hard work and smart work. After gaining adequate experience these people start aspiring to be PMP certified and look for eligibility criteria. And let’s just say they meet the minimum requirement of 4500 hour or 7500 hour and they go through the training of minimum 35 hours. If you have gone through all of that for a certificate which will give you professional growth and financial growth why not put in some hours to actually study?

The bitter truth

To answer your question; No, it is not likely you will pass PMP exam without studying. The chances of that happening is bare minimum. The only people who have managed to do that, are the ones who are exceptionally lucky or exceptionally gifted or exceptionally well versed in project management that they know the concept of PMBOK guide, which is the prescribed book for PMP exam. But I doubt more than 5% people will fall under these category of people. Even a single category of the above mentioned is difficult to find. Luck could be on side of 1 person but not many people. The exceptionally gifted people are also rare to come across, even rarer than lucky. Last one is close to non-existent.

Are you lucky enough?

Let’s take just example of being lucky. Only 2-3% people out of all the people who will not study for PMP exam will pass, if they are very lucky. Keep in mind this is one of the most difficult and valuable certifications in the world so it is a tough nut to crack. Are you certain that you will fall under the lucky people category? The chances are fairly slim. We also need to remember the fact that you spent years working in project management and have undertaken minimum training which means you have spent a handsome amount of money on taking this exam. Why let it all go to waste? There is a solution for people who don’t feel like studying.

We have a plan out

It is normal to feel that way. Humans, psychologically, don’t want to put in hard work when there is no instant gratification given to them. But I will provide you a solution to this “no motivation to study” problem. And if you are a busy person which is why you are not able to study, even you can apply this strategy. So hear me out. What you need are just 10 days. It is not much. And I promise if you dedicate just 2-5 hours every day you will nail the exam in one go.

Plan of action

On day 1 you will need to take a mock exam. Note down the topics you are having problems in. These are your problem areas, you only need to study these. If you just want to pass just limit the weaknesses to the extent that you will pass. But it is advisable you go through weak topics at least once to not be blank. Once you have ascertained your weaknesses, pick up PMBOK guide and find these topics. Study for 2-3 hours for the next 6 days. This is all it would take. You can manage the strong topics just improve a little in a week that will help you out so much.

Final days of studying

Once you are done with the studying for 6 days, try practice tests on last 4 days. Do practice questions. First two days solely focused on weak topics. Last 2 days for strong ones. 2 hours would suffice but give those 2 hours without any distractions. Keep your phone aside or on silent. Keep people out of the room. No music. No distraction what so ever. No email checking either. 2 hours for your improvement. The result you will achieve from this minimum hard work will be way more than the effort you are putting- do remember this fact; whenever you feel like quitting. You will not quit. You are not weak.
