A small percentage of applicants are randomly selected for an audit in any Project Management Professional (PMP) exam application cycle. Even though the prospects of being selected may seem stressful, the audit is usually a simple process. Doing audit is a way of life for the PMI (Project Management Institute). This organization delivers the PMP credential, a worldwide recognized certificate that assures employers that a person is qualified and trained to manage projects. PMI is also the organization that oversees the PMBOK Guide's documentation, conducts the certification examination, audits the applicants, and many more.

What is the PMP Audit?

A PMP audit is a process that ensures that the right applicants are getting the PMP certification. Organizations and employers throughout have trust in the PMI's certifications credibility. The PMI must maintain the PMP certification and exam process quality so that only professionals with the required skills, experience, and trained cones an achieve it. The audit is necessary to keep the high standards of PMP certification processes. No one from the applied candidates knows if they will be selected for an audit since it is a random process. Every applicant has an equal chance of being audited.

According to PMI's official website PMI, it is mentioned that:

"Every applicant is subject to an audit, although only a percentage of applicants are selected for an audit. The selection of an applicant for audit is random." And there is no way to avoid the audit altogether.

What is the PMP Audit Process?

PMI's audit verifies whether the applicant's information and the applicant are eligible to apply for the PMP exam. Once the application is submitted, you will be immediately informed if you have been selected for an audit. The PMI will send you an e-mail with instructions you need to follow to complete the process. If you are not selected for an audit, you can pay the exam fee and proceed to the Pearson VUE site to schedule your PMP exam date.

The PMI will ask you to send the following documents:

Proof of Education

You need to provide photocopies of your educational certificates. Further, make sure they are arranged in order, start from the lowest qualification, and the last document should be the highest qualification or vice versa.

Proof of Training

It is mandatory to attend a 35 contact hours training program. If you have participated in a REP (Registered Education Provider) training program, a copy of a course completion certificate would be enough. If you did your training with a non-REP, you need to submit the certificate of attendance and learning objectives.

Proof of Experience

The Experience audit process is lengthy and laborious. If you are selected for the audit process, you will get access to a particular section of my PMI. In that section, you will find your audit package. You have to fill in your experience details and take a printout of it. Then you have to collect signatures from your supervisors for each project on the experience form. This process may take time. You will be given 90 days to complete the audit process. Ask your supervisor to provide a signed experience certificate in a sealed envelope with another sign on the seal. If in case the proof is not sealed in an envelope, you may fail your audit. If you cannot get your supervisor's signature, either because of bad relationships or the company no longer exists, contact PMI customer care; they will advise you on how to proceed further. If all the experience certificates are ready, put them in a sealed envelope and send them to the PMI address. Please note that the PMI does not accept faxed or e-mailed audit documents. Send all the material in a single envelope. Generally, PMI will take one week to review your package and inform you regarding your result. If you have passed the audit, then you can complete the payment and schedule the exam. If you have failed the audit, no need to worry; rectify the issue and then apply again.

What is the Purpose of Audit?

The PMI audits applicants to assure the quality of the PMP exam certification process. This process ensures that only eligible candidates will take the exam and keeps fraudulent applicants from being PMP certified. How long does it take to complete the Audit process?

The PMI will give you information on everything that they need to review your case. You need to arrange the documents required and send them to the PMI. PMI takes one week to review your application, papers and you will be given your result a week later. Keep in mind that the PMI reserves the right to audit any candidate even after passing the PMP certification. If you fail in the audit, you will lose your credential, and your fee will not be refunded.
