What is SAFe Agile Vs Agile ?

According to the Scrum Guide, the "essence of Scrum is a small team of people." That would be good if all of our projects were small and did not require scaling beyond our small staff. Using native Scrum of Scrums, we may handle scaling between functions or teams. However, as we begin to go far beyond that, we must start thinking about a scalable framework. So, the primary distinction between Agile and Scaled Agile is that Agile was developed for small teams with specified functions, whereas Scaled Agile is intended to expand up to the organization.

What precisely is Agile?

Agile methodology is a dynamic technique that has shown to be highly effective in transforming firms, catalyzing innovation, and accelerating profitable growth. Telecommunications, education, media & entertainment, retail, finance & banking are all in great demand.

Agile, according to the Agile Alliance, is “the ability to create and respond to change. It is a way of dealing with, and ultimately succeeding in, an uncertain and turbulent environment.” It is a collection of ideas and concepts outlined in the Agile Manifesto. While it can be applied to a wide range of projects, it most commonly refers to a set of software development methodologies that employ iterative and incremental development.

There is also a collection of 12 basic principles. According to the first two principles, the top priority is to satisfy the customer by delivering valuable software on time and promptly, and to welcome changing requirements, even late in development. Agile methods leverage change for the benefit of the customer's competitive advantage.” Scrum, Extreme Programming (XP), Kanban, and Feature-Driven Development are some of the most popular Agile methodologies (FDD.) Scrum is by far the most popular of them. All Agile methodologies have one thing in common: they use time boxes, which the Agile Alliance defines as "a previously agreed period during which a person or a team works steadily towards completion of some goal," and they use iterations to "develop the product through a series of repeated cycles and increments to successively add to the functionality of the product."

The Scrum Agile version identifies critical roles: A Product Owner adds work to a Product Backlog to solve a challenging problem. He or she is also in charge of defining and conveying the Product Goal, ordering Product Backlog items, and ensuring that the Product Backlog is transparent, visible, and understandable. During a Sprint, the Scrum (or Development) Team converts a selection of work into a value increment. The Scrum Team and its stakeholders review the results and make adjustments for the following Sprint. They are cross-functional, self-organizing, and make decisions about how to execute the work. The Scrum Master is responsible for the overall effectiveness of the Scrum Team. They accomplish this by allowing the Scrum Team to enhance its methods while staying inside the Scrum framework and by reducing barriers.

What precisely is SAFe Agile?

The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a comprehensive framework for large-scale Agile project teams to easily implement an Agile transformation. The first step toward such a change is to use Lean/Agile principles and practices at all levels of an organization.

As previously said, Agile was created for small teams, whereas SAFe was created to expand to several levels, ranging from critical to full SAFE. It builds on and develops on the Agile foundation. SAFe for Lean Enterprises is a knowledge foundation of tried-and-true ideas, methods, and competencies for attaining business agility through the use of Lean, Agile, and DevOps.

Essential SAFe - comprises the bare minimum of roles, events, and artifacts required to constantly deliver business solutions as a Team of Agile Teams via an Agile Release Train (ART). Large Solution SAFe defines additional roles, procedures, and guidelines for developing and evolving the world's largest applications, networks, and cyber-physical systems. It includes a new capability called Enterprise Solution Delivery. Portfolio SAFe integrates strategy and execution, organizing solution development around the flow of value through one or more value streams. It is the most basic configuration for achieving Business Agility, and it includes the essential skills of Lean Portfolio Management, Continuous Learning Culture, and Organizational Agility.

The most complete setup is Full SAFe. It facilitates the development and maintenance of huge, integrated solutions that traditionally require hundreds of people to develop and manage. The SAFe framework, like Agile, includes numerous specified responsibilities, some of which are depending on the degree to which one aspires.

What are the similarities between Agile, and SAFe?

Scrum, like XP and Kanban, is an Agile method. As a result, all Agile types are similar in that they work in short bursts and maintain tight contact with consumers. As a result, the true comparison is between Scrum and SAFe. Scrum/Agile and SAFe are comparable in that they both use Scrum Guide roles such as Product Owner, Scrum Master, and Teams. The same guidelines apply when it comes to sprints, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.

There are many advantages of Agile like Customer satisfaction, their regular participation ensures that they get what they want, The ability to pivot away from inferior solutions rapidly, Risks are reduced as a result of shorter timeframes and quality integration into the team and last but not the least because of regular retrospectives, it is possible to improve continuously.

SAFe provides all of these advantages, but it also adds the capacity to look at work not only in terms of value streams but also to analyze the portfolio as it relates to the enterprise's strategy.

Conclusion

Agile has evolved into a framework that enables business agility, allowing businesses to stay adaptable in their approach to completing tasks. Defined responsibilities, short groups of work, and a consistent cadence all contribute to a focus on product delivery while reducing risk. Agile, concentrates on small teams, and whenever work spreads to the enterprise, a scaling technique is required to enable teams to work while still focused on the wider strategic picture. The Scaled Agile Framework is one such framework. It keeps the essential ideas of Agile but adds roles and ceremonies that allow it to serve at any level of the company.
