How much practice is required for preparing for PMP exam?

As the PMP Certification eligibility criteria includes 36 months (for degree holders) and 60 months (for associate degree/ high school diploma holders), I believe most of you would be full time employees and would want to know how to prepare for PMP Certification exam. A thumb rule to know whether you have practiced enough or not is that you should be able to answer 85% or more sample questions in a full mock test correctly on your first try and to do so you would require to practice a lot.

Practice is the key to success

Before starting you practicing sample questions or solving mock papers you should have a look of prototype questions given by PMI to know what are the different types of questions are being asked in a PMP exam. After doing this you should go through A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) latest edition as suggested by PMI because it contains the PMP exam content that you must know and PMP exam practice questions as well. You should learn and understand all the keywords mentioned in PMBOK Guide’s Glossary.

Keywords are lifesaver

Understanding the keywords would help you in handling knowledge based questions easily because these questions are usually based on the PMBOK Guide or project management concepts. Those candidates who have prepared well from PMBOK Guide would be able to answer most of the knowledge based questions and those who have not prepared well would naturally be facing difficulties while attempting this type of questions. That’s why some candidates love knowledge based questions and some get afraid on seeing the terminologies used in question paper.

Time management is really important

While practicing PMP exam sample questions you should keep a check on time as well. The duration of PMP exam will be 230 minutes and to finish your exam well in time you should try to answer a question within a minute so that you don’t have to rush at the end. This would be only possible if you practice a lot of questions as this would help to increase your speed and you would also learn how to attempt lengthy questions in a short span of time. The remaining time can be utilized to revise the answers.

After putting so much efforts if you have not practiced to complete questions in time then there is no point of giving this exam because if you leave about 20% of questions in the PMP exam then it is very difficult for you to pass.Hence, practice solving questions within a minute so that if during exam you are not able to solve 2-3 questions you can attempt them at the end and this would be possible only if you would be able to solve rest of the questions in time.

Be prepared

So now you know that if any one or any website says that they know the questions from last year or any previous years that would be 100% there in the next PMP exam then you would not trust them. PMI knows how to play with words really well and design the question paper in a manner that no question is repeated. So be on a safer side and prepare well for your PMP exam by practicing questions in a specific amount of type and do not get distracted by anyone’s sayings. Your decision to take this exam is right and you can come out with flying colours and be a PMP Certification holder.
