Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is a widely recognised certification in project management and achieving it is a dream of many professionals who want to pursue their career in project management field. Project Management is the application of skills, knowledge, techniques, and tools required to manage project activities to achieve the targeted goals of project requirements. Through PMP Certification examination,PMI examines your knowledge of using these tools and techniques to manage the project and if you score above the required pass rate then it proves that you are a deserving candidate and will be awarded with PMP Certification.

If you are also interested in taking PMP certification exam you must fulfil the eligibility criteria as described by PMI. A candidate should either have a 4 year graduate degree and minimum 36 months of experience in leading projects or have a secondary degree (high school diploma or associate degree) and minimum 60 months of work experience of leading projects. Apart from this, the candidate should have undergone a minimum of 35 hours of PMP training/ course. This eligibility criteria is set like this because PMP is only for experienced professionals essentially not forthe project manager only.

PMP exam structure

You must understand the PMP Certification exam structure before attempting the exam. As you know that a project has five phases, i.e., initiation, planning, execution, monitoring & controlling, and closing, the PMP exam question paper is prepared around these phases and in addition to these domains is code of ethics, professional conduct, people and business environment. The PMP exam is composed of 180 questions which are a combination of multiple- responses, multiple choice questions, matching, hotspot and limited fill-in-the-blanks as per updated exam pattern which got implemented on January 2nd, 2021.

The PMP exam is divided into three domains and is based on PMI's latest edition of the PMBOK Guide. To obtain the PMP certification, candidates must pass the exam.

People

This domain, which accounts for 42 percent of the exam, assesses a candidate's ability to lead a project team. Here are some evaluable tasks to consider:

  • Organizing and managing a team
  • Any dispute's resolution
  • Check to see if your team has received sufficient training

Process

Professionals get evaluated on the basis of the technical aspects of project management at this stage, which accounts for half of the exam's weight (50 percent). A few process tasks are included in the PMP exam, such as:

  • Planning and management of budgets and resources
  • Bringing the various aspects of project planning together
  • Maintaining a record of project changes

Business Environment

This domain, which accounts for only 8% of the total, evaluates a project manager's ability to adhere to organisational requirements. The tasks listed below are just a few examples.

  • Planning and managing project compliance
  • Determining the project's worth and advantages
  • Assisting in the transformation of organisations/li>

This sums up to 100 % and now you must have a hint about how much time you would be giving to each project phase. For PMP exam preparation you must go through the PMBOK Guide (latest edition) thoroughly and practice a lot of questions and mock test to get a fair idea of the type of questions that are being asked in the PMP exam.

The duration of this exam is 230 minutes. There will be no scheduled break for paper based exam however if you are taking computer based exam then you will get one additional break for a total of two 10 minute breaks. So while taking exam make sure that you are keeping an eye on the time as well. While preparing for the PMP exam do not forget to practice a certain set of questions with time restriction. So that when you take the actual exam you do not run out of time and end up leaving questions unmarked.

After knowing the exam pattern many aspirants may have a question about does PMP exam has any negative marking? You can take a breath of relief as the answer to your question is NO. Knowing that you should now make sure that during the exam you should not leave any question unmarked. Even if you are not sure about the correct answer or do not have any clue about the right answer then also you should mark an option as your answer. There are 25% chances of getting your answer right. So don’t miss out that 25% of chance.

does pmp exam have negative marking

Because if you miss the opportunity to answer then you will not lose anything but if your answer comes out to be correct then you will be able to get an extra point. If you are able to eliminate at least one unlikely option then the chances of your answer getting correct gets 33% and if you eliminate at least 2 options that you feel are not suitable as per the question then chances of your answer getting correct increases to 50%. Isn’t that great? This at least motivates me personally and I believe even you must be feeling a bit more confident about it.

Tips

Here are some tips for you which you should keep in mind before attempting the PMP exam:

  • You have to answer 180 questions in 230 minutes. Somanage your time accordingly, try to devote 1 minute for each question.
  • Don’t linger on tough questions. Leave them for the time being and review them later.
  • Since there is no negative marking, donot leave anything unanswered.

The concept of PMP Certification exam is simple which may not look the same to everyone but the concept is that you should have enough knowledge and skills that you need for managing a project. If your practice and knowledge is up to the mark then you can definitely clear the exam. As there is no negative marking, this is an advantage for you so that even if you do not know the answer to any question you can at least mark the nearest possible answer without any fear of negative marking.
