How do I submit PDUs to PMI?

Learning Mudra, Category - PMP

Project Management Institute (PMI) administers 10 certification programs for professionals who either belong to or who want to pursue their career in project management field. The agenda of these certifications is continuous growth of a professional. To fulfil this agenda PMI made all the certifications expirable, that is after a certain time the certifications would stand invalid. To achieve this PMI introduced a Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) system, under which all the certifications have a certain set of requirements which are supposed to be fulfilled and the certificate should be renewed before the deadline.

The eligibility criteria of renewal of a certification comprises of PDUs, Professional Development Units, which are one hour blocks of time that a certification holder is required to spend, by doing activities such as self-learning, teaching others and volunteering. These PDUs are made in contrast to the PMI Talent Triangle which comprises of Technical, Strategic and Leadership skills which should be worked upon and improved with time. For PMP Certification renewal you are required to complete minimum 60 PDUs which can be achieved from 2 ways: education (self-learning) or giving back to the profession.

Steps to participate in CCR program

  • Earn a PMI certification.
  • Participate in professional development activities and earn PDUs.
  • Record and report PDUs.
  • Fulfil CCR.
  • Complete the CCR application and pay renewal fee amount.
  • Certification renewal is complete.

Education and Giving Back PDUs

You should first know the calculation of PDU and number of hours. 1 PDU = 1 hour of educational or giving back engagement. The minimum requirement of education category is 35 PDUs and maximum is 60 PDUs. Out of 35 PDUs you must earn minimum of 8 PDUs related to Technical skills, 8 PDUs related to Leadership skills and 8 PDUs related to Strategic skills. There is no minimum requirement for giving back category but if you want to earn PDUs in this category then you can earn maximum of 25 PDUs.
